Stockholm 1956. The Swedish botanist, candidate and lieutenant Nils von Ekelöw, presents his research to a panel of professors.

A woman released from prison, gets on a ship without any plans to find an island called ‘Paradise’ that was advertised on a flyer she got in the train. She meets a male teacher on the ship who helps her to get a job at a school cafeteria on the island. One day, she rescues a student who happened to be making the same mistake the woman made which eventually landed her in prison. Despite the rescue, the girl eventually catches on fire.

Problems arise between the divers Román and Lauro when the former falls in love with a prostitute on the beaches of Acapulco.

Televangelist Bobby Paradise "saw God" in some space debris when he was returning to Earth as an astronaut. Or at least he was convinced he did by his wife, a Cape Canaveral groupie at the time Bobby was with NASA. Now they have built up an extensive TV empire.
